National Geographic’s Fieldscope tool is an online GIS tool that allows sharing, mapping and graphing data collected in citizen science projects. www.fieldscope.org

Watch this Google Hangout webinar on YouTube in which the National Geographic Education team introduce FieldScope and present a demonstration of basic FieldScope functionality including photo and data uploads, graphing and mapping.

With FieldScope, citizen scientists can engage in activities such as:

  • exploring maps and data to ask and answer questions about places
  • conducting fieldwork and sharing observations and stories
  • participating in social and scientific networks to document and improve communities.

Collaborative Geography investigation for schools: 9,000+ students already signed up!

A school in England is looking to set a world record in capturing geographic information using a ArcGIS online webmap. They would like to get as many school students across the UK and Ireland to join this record-breaking event during Geography Awareness Week 17-21 November. It is completely FREE and will be FUN! All you have to do it get as many students as you can to add data to their GIS map during that week. Lots of teaching resources and ideas will be provided for you.

The technology is very new and is still in BETA (which means there may be a few minor bugs in it) but we have tested it and it looks good. Stay tuned for updates …

Seminars and hands-on workshops relating to GIS education in Cork, 4-7 Sept

The European GIS Education Symposium – EUGISES – is taking place in Cork from 04 – 07 September this year. The symposium will be an occasion for all of those interested in the teaching and learning of GIS to share ideas, best practice, innovations and novel applications. Of particular interest this year will be two hands-on workshops, one led by Google and the other by ESRI UK, that will offer practical introductions to the use of innovative new technologies from these two major players in the field.

The programme includes sessions of relevance to second-level educators. See the programme for more information:

Here are the details again: Ordnance Survey Ireland is running a competition for primary schools called Map My School with some fantastic prizes on offer, including iPads and a trip to OSi in Dublin. Aimed at upper primary classes (4th-6th) it requires a class to make a map of their school, including buildings and the perimeter, and decorate it creatively. All class entries must arrive at OSi headquarters in Dublin with a completed entry form before 11th April 2014.

An Introduction to Scoilnet Maps, our new online CPD course, is now open for enrolment on teachercpd.ie. The course is approximately 1-hour in duration and aims to achieve the following objectives:

  • Teachers will become familiar with the mapping content available in Scoilnet Maps, including the maps, aerial photography and data layers.
  • Teachers will interact with the content using the widgets/tools provided in Scoilnet Maps.
  • Teachers will gain an understanding of how to use Scoilnet Maps as an educational tool in the classroom.
