11 July 2013    Scoilnet Maps Scoops a Special Achievement in GIS Award in San Diego.

Scoilnet Maps has been recognised by Esri Inc as this year’s Winner of the Special Award in GIS (SAG) for Ireland. The awards ceremony took place on July 10th at the San Diego Convention Centre. The award recognises the integration of GIS in Irish schools to improve the classroom experience for both pupils and teachers alike.

New Leaving Cert Lesson Plan Available

1 July 2013 New lesson plan available – Using Scoilnet Maps to Learn about the Population of the BMW Region.

A new lesson plan for Leaving Certificate Geography entitled Using Scoilnet Maps to Learn about the Population of the BMW Region has been published. The lesson demonstrates how the LAYERS in Scoilnet Maps can be used in a syllabus-friendly way. In particular, the BOUNDARIES layer is used to locate the BMW region and the Census Population Data layer is used to examine the population dynamics of the region.

An associated activity sheet for students is also available.

Updates to Scoilnet Maps

19 June 2013   A number of updates have been implemented on Scoilnet Maps.

  1. A new search box in the top toolbar to make searching for places easier and quicker.
  2. The use of An Post Geodirectory database behind the search function. Geodirectory contains every single address in Ireland.
  3. The development of a new Irish Grid widget (available in the top toolbar) which displays Irish Grid references on the maps between scales of 1:50,000 and 1:5,000.
  4. Modifications to the Swipe and Spotlight widget to make it clearer and more reliable to use.
  5. Inclusion of a Bedrock Geology layer for Ireland.
  6. The ability of move pop-up windows around the screen.
  7. Improvements to the default settings for the Draw and Measure widget.
